The 10 Essential Public Health Services
The main purposes of public health outlined by the Public Health Steering Committee are to prevent epidemics and spread of disease, protect against environmental hazards, prevent injuries, promote, encourage healthy behaviors, respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery, and assure the quality and accessibility of services. The committee defines the mission of public health as fulfilling society's interest in assuring conditions in which people can be healthy. Its aim is to generate an organized community effort to address the public interest in health by applying scientific and technical knowledge to prevent disease and promote health. The mission of public health is addressed by private organizations and individuals as well as by public agencies. But the governmental public health agency has a unique function: to see to it that vital elements are in place and that the mission is adequately addressed.
Essential Service 3 (Inform, Educate, and Empower People About Health Issues) details public health officials’ duty to use using health education via media to inform decision-making choices and develop behaviors for healthy living. However, current social media platforms are engineered to push forth misinformed opinions rather than amplifying the voices of public health officials. By reverse-engineering the algorithm and working closely with scientists, social media companies can help promote valid prevention tactics and safety precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Good Health and Well Being
The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. Sustainable Development Goal 3 ensures healthy lives and promote well-being for all of all ages.
Immunizations are a key part of this goal, just as vaccine development is crucial to defeating the coronavirus. The UN is attempting to answer the main roadblock: how can the public trust in science be earned, vaccine literacy be built, and misleading vaccine information and vaccine hesitancy be addressed? Social media discourse indicates hesitancy to receive the vaccine even after it is distributed, due to general distrust in science and racial grievances of the past. In response, co-organizers are launching ‘CONVINCE’ (COVID New Vaccine Information, Communication and Education) – a call to action.
